Introduction

The main point of this blog will be to explore and synthesize how art is deeply connected to the seemingly polar opposite world of physics. I will outline how artists have often foreshadowed the theories and discoveries of scientists throughout history.

To do this properly, I should assert a definition of art that I will be using. When I was in 6th grade my half-crazy art teacher asked our class to write on a sticky note what we believe art is. Everyone had a different definition of art, from painting to creating with different materials. Art cannot necessarily be simply defined, there is no one concise meaning of art as it means something different to every person. The definition of art I will be employing is something that is a manifestation of human expression, imagination, and self--an action or thought that is performed and loaded with intention--something truly beautiful.

For the first 6 weeks, I will be reading the book "Art and Physics: Parallel visions in Space, Time, and Light" by Leonard Shlain. I will spend the final 6 weeks doing independent research on whatever this book compels me to further explore. Leonard Shlain is not your typical artist or physicist. In fact, he is a heart surgeon with a knack for physics. Shlain describes his profession as an art, for a heart that does not "look" beautiful will most likely not function beautifully. His art corrects the heart to make it beautiful with the intention of making it function beautifully.

This topic is not limited to the realms of art and physics, in fact, it extends into the domains of religion, philosophy, biology, mathematics, psychology, history, and much more.
